Scottish Grand National Top Jockeys

The 2007 Coral Scottish Grand National Festival was dominated by three trainer-jockey teams – trainer Ferdy Murphy with jockey PJ McDonald, Paul Nicholls with Ruby Walsh, and Peter Bowen with Tom O’Brien.

PJ McDonald rode Hot Weld to victory in the 2007 Scottish Grand National, as well as winning two other races in the Festival – the £30,000 Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase and the Scottish Sun Handicap Hurdle.

With PJ McDonald, Ferdy Murphy’s Hot Weld went on to become the only horse to win the Ayr Gold Cup in the same year as winning the Scottish Grand National. For the National Hunt summer season, McDonald has made a return to flat racing, and jockey Mick O’Connell has joined Ferdy Murphy’s stables.

Legendary Ruby Walsh definitely figures among the Scottish Grand National top jockeys. He won the Scottish Grand National on Take Control in 2002, and earned a second position in 2005 and again in 2006. In 2007, Walsh – with trainer Paul Nicholls – rode winners in three of the Scottish Grand National Festival races.

With trainer Peter Bowen, jockey Tom O’Brien also shone at the 2007 Scottish Grand National. He rode the winners in two of the Festival races – the Ashleybank Investments Future Champion Novices Chase and the Securities Novices Handicap Chase.

In 2008, look out for top-notch jockey Graham Lee, now riding for Ferdy Murphy.

Top National Hunt Jockeys

In addition to champion jockeys like Ruby Walsh and PJ McDonald, look out for any of the top National Hunt jockeys at the 2008 Scottish Grand National.

Included in this list would be Scottish-born Tony McCoy, who’s recognised as one of the top National Hunt racing jockeys. He won the 1997 Scottish Grand National riding Belmont King, trained by Paul Nicholls. More recently, Tony McCoy won both the Irish Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2007.

Other world-class National Hunt jockeys to back include the likes of Paul, Philip, and sister Nina Carberry, AP McCoy, Russ Garrity, Tony Dobbin and Tom Scudamore.

Possible new Scottish Grand National top jockeys for 2008 include the Irish Denis O’Regan – now riding for top trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, and Dominic Elsworth – riding for Jonjo O’Neill and Tom George.
